Looking for good areas to live in Chicago?

Im 27 years old, male. I need to know what are some decent neighborhoods to rent in chicago. As of right now I found a really nice place in Arlington Heights, but I prefer to live in the city. I don't want to spend more than 1200 per month on rent. Now here's the hard part of my search; I don't want to live in a neighborhood that's infested with gangs. I'm originally from Detroit, but I been over seas for 10 years and I don't want to be in that type of environment. All responses will be greatly appreciated...Thanks
