Question for professional photographers: How did you get started in photography? More....?

I have been bitten by the "photography" bug and have been thinking about doing it professionally on the side. Since I have no formal training whatsoever, I'm looking into taking photography cles. In the meantime, what is a good book and/or websites to get familiar with equipment, camera functions, etc. Also, I have read great reviews of the Canon Rebel XT. Is this a good beginner's camera? Can I take professional quality pics with it? Any info & advice is greatly appreciated!!!
