What's the name of this movie?

Hi. This movie is a about the best servant in Europe. He is very loyal to his king because he does not feel like a servant and thinks his work sets him apart from everyone else (which it does). Anyway the king ends up having royal friends over for more than a day(maybe a week). So the servant plans for the occasion. He ends up meeting a girl and gives her a handful of flowers, one of them being made out of sugar, which he has created and painted, telling her that he will love her until the last flower withers. He takes care of the guests wonderfully with gourmet meals and entertainment. One night he had a firework display (fireworks were new at the time). The king however has a gambling problem. He ends up betting this servant and loses. When the servant finds out from his new girlfriend (who i think was royal), he is heartbroken because he was treated like an object rather than a human. Instead of running off with the girl, he commits suicide. I think it might be based on a true story because I saw it in a history cl. The movie takes place in maybe the 18th Century. I saw it around 2003. I do not know how old it is. I am pretty sure this movie's name is one word and starts with a V - the name of the servant.
